Lord Varatix
The problem with the old trix is he's susceptibility to all sorts of attack before he even gets to deliver his damage payload.
Trix prone to auto-damage? = added toughness and invulnerability **Check**
Trix prone to auto-damage spells like explode undead or techno-overload = added wand type to Counter spells and cast a few of his own ; he also has toughness and invulnerability to absorb if not totally negate the explode damage. **Check**
Trix prone to BOL w/ stone of scrying or simply arcane sight enchanment = added magic immunity (even Kenaz with a 12 attack rating still needs a "7" to hit a 19 defense. **Check**
Trix too expensive at 156pts = Now just a 126pts. **Check**
Apparently you cannot achieve the lower point cost unless you take a notch out of some of the previous stats. I see an overall balanced Figure.
Here's a Good combo for him thanks to that reduced cost if you still want a melee beast.
Lord Varatrix 126 pts
WAND OF FENCING - 27 points (-1 to -4 attack rating Parry for you're opponent)
Bracers of the Giant - 34 points (Crushing Blow and +1 damage)
optional *Gear Shield* 27 points (+2 defense)
19+2 defense with a -1 to -4 parry potential that gives him essentially a minimum 22 to a 24 (upto a max 25 if enemy figure has a minimum +1 attack through an item or relic or gang-up boost) defense against close combat attacks. Most 12 attack figures would need a "10" to hit him in a minimum 1-3 roll for a 1d6 parry roll. On a 4-6 roll for parry, that 12 attack rating goes to an "11" and a "12" to hit.
Wand-type figures (except for Forgemasters) can't even shoot him (Magic Immunity).
Bow or sword type attack figures and Forgemasters need to deal with a 22 defense while he's soaring.
It's not perfect but still quite good with a 5 crushing blow damage. I agree that i'll miss the counterattack but overall still an interesting figure.
For a more budget friendly build? you can go with:
Lord Varatrix 126 pts
WAND OF FENCING - 27 points (-1 to -4 attack rating Parry for you're opponent)
Magestone Bracers - 10 points (+1 defense and spell resistance against those pesky Forgemasters)
Trix just got smarter, lower cost, damage reduction, high defense, and the ability to counter and cast spells of his own. He no longer charges in head first and gets beaten up by lesser beings afterwards.
**What I like the most that was done here is that the new Trix DOESN'T outright Outseat the Old Trix. They could have made a trix with a reduced point cost or a trix that had the high point cost of Vextha and toughness and similar stats that will make you forget about the old one. Good thing that they didn't. I wouldn't want to see the same strategy for the same figure. I can now also field both trix versions in an army :-) . Check out my Bag of Trix!!!**
Re: Lord Varatix
Or you can take it to max defense with:
Lord Varatrix 126 pts
WAND OF FENCING - 27 points (-1 to -4 attack rating Parry for you're opponent)
Wylden Shield - 39 points (+2 defense and hex)
Magestone Bracers - 10 points (+1 defense and spell resistance against those pesky Forgemasters)
minimum 23 defense against close combat on a 1-3 on a 1d6 parry roll
maximum 24 defense against a close combat on a "4" parry roll.
maximum 25 defense against a close combat attack on a "5" parry roll.
maximum essential 26 defense against close combat on a "6" roll against a figure with at least a +1 attack modifier (from an item,relic,enchantment,gang-up).
